Starting a job in Israel: form 101, pension and your first payslip

When you start a job, fill in form 101 within 7 days, tell your employer which pension fund to use, and arrange tax coordination if you have other income. Then check your first payslip.

Official forms and government websites are almost always in Hebrew only. That is why we show the Hebrew name of each field or document next to the translation: look for exactly these words on the form.

Step by step

  1. Fill in form 101 (טופס 101, the "employee card") within 7 days of starting work, or by your first payday if that is sooner. Your employer uses it to work out how much income tax to deduct. You also fill in a new one at the start of every tax year, and an update within 7 days of any change, such as marriage, a birth, a new address or a second job.
  2. Claim every credit point in part ח of the form. As a new immigrant, tick item 4, אני עולה חדש/ה (I am a new immigrant), and attach your Teudat Oleh (תעודת עולה). Not sure what else applies to you? See tax credit points.
  3. Attach a copy of your ID card with the appendix (תעודת זהות עם ספח). A digital appendix can be downloaded from the Population Authority website. Only have a photo on your phone? Turn it into a PDF with our free image to PDF tool.
  4. Choose a pension fund and tell your employer. You choose the type of pension insurance and the company that manages it, and fill in joining forms that the employer signs. If you do not choose, the employer insures you in one of the default pension funds selected by the Ministry of Finance.
  5. Have another income? Arrange tax coordination (תיאום מס) online on the Tax Authority website and give the approval to each employer. This applies to a second job, a pension, or earlier income in the same year, such as unemployment or maternity benefits. Without it, one of your employers may deduct tax at the maximum rate.
  6. Check your first payslip (תלוש שכר) with the list below. If something does not match, tell the payroll department right away: until the year ends, it can be corrected in the next payslips.

How to use our Hebrew form 101 filler

Our form 101 filler fills in the official PDF in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. The screens are in Hebrew, so choose English in the bar at the top of the tool: a short English line then appears under every field.

  1. Download the blank official form 101 from gov.il (the tool links to it) and drop the PDF into the tool.
  2. Go through the 6 steps. The table below says what each field means.
  3. Sign on the screen, download the filled PDF and give it to your employer with the documents it asks for.

What to check on your first payslip

  • Your name, ID number and start date.
  • Your base salary and job percentage, as agreed.
  • The number of credit points (נקודות זיכוי): if it is lower than what you claimed, a document may be missing.
  • Income tax (מס הכנסה): an unusually high deduction may mean that form 101 or tax coordination is missing.
  • Pension contributions (פנסיה): when they should start in your case (see below).
  • The bank account your salary is paid into.

Pension: when contributions start

Under the pension extension order, men from age 21 and women from age 20 are entitled to pension contributions. The total is 18.5% of the salary: 6% from you and 12.5% from the employer, of which 6% is for severance pay.

If you already had active pension insurance when you started, you are entitled from the first day: the first transfer is made after 3 months of work (or at the end of the tax year, if sooner), backdated to the start. If you were not insured, you are entitled only after 6 months of work. A collective agreement or your contract can set an earlier date. Bring proof of active insurance, such as the latest quarterly report from your fund, to your employer at the start.

You cannot give up pension contributions, even if you are offered a higher salary instead.

Two jobs at the same time

Each employer sees only its own salary. In form 101, mark in parts ה and ט that you have other income, and the tax coordination sets the right deduction rate for each employer. If you did not coordinate, you can get the difference back only with a tax refund request after the year ends.

Started mid-year? Your yearly credit points are spread over the months you actually work, so the monthly credit in your first payslips may be higher. Keep a copy of the form 101 you submitted and the documents you attached: they save time if you ever ask for a tax refund.
